Description
-----------
WinPost provides a mechanism for manipulating on-screen Post-it (tm)
notes for Microsoft Windows 3.0. Up to 32 "notes" can be in use at any
given time. WinPost will save the position and the content of every
note upon program termination, so next time you bring it up, the notes
will look exactly the same as when you exited the program.
Controller Icon
---------------
When you start WinPost, it will appear as an icon with the familiar
plaid design (tm). This is called the Controller Icon, and it cannot be
maximized into a window.
When you click on the icon, it will display a system menu with the
following menu items:
Move Allows the user to move the icon.
Close Terminates the program.
Switch To... Allows the user to switch to another window.
Create a 1.5x2 note Selecting this menu item creates a new
1.5" by 2" note. If a maximum number of
notes (32) is already in use, a dialog
box with an error message will appear.
Create a 3x3 note Selecting this menu item creates a new
3" by 3" note. If a maximum number of
notes (32) is already in use, a dialog
box with an error message will appear.
Create a 3x5 note Selecting this menu item creates a new
3" by 5" note. If a maximum number of
notes (32) is already in use, a dialog
box with an error message will appear.
Show all notes Selecting this menu item will show all
active notes. All hidden notes are
redisplayed, and notes covered by other
windows are brought to the top. Notes
Icon will also disappear (see below).
Hide all notes Selecting this menu item will hide all
active notes. It will also create a
Notes Icon to indicate the fact that at
least one note is being hidden.
Customize font... Selecting this menu brings up the font
customization dialog (explained below),
which allows the user to customize the
note window font.
About Winpost... Displays information about the author.
Font Customization Dialog
-------------------------
This dialog box can be used to customize the font displayed in note
windows. Several different parameters can be controlled: the program
looks for an available font which most closely meets the requested
parameters and uses it. These parameters can be specified by the user:
Height: Specifies the desired height of characters in
the font (in pixels). If it is set to zero, a
reasonable default size is used.
Width: Specifies the average width of characters in the
font (in pixels). If it is set to zero, the
aspect ratio of the device will be matched
against the aspect ratio of available fonts for
the closest match.
Weight: Specifies the weight of the font. 400 is
normal, and 700 is bold. If it is set to zero,
a default weight is used.
Char Set: Specifies the desired character set. The OEM
character set is system-dependent.
Pitch: Specifies the pitch of the font. It can be
fixed, variable or set to default.
Family: Specifies the font family. It can be
Decorative, Modern, Roman, Script, Swiss or
unspecified.
Once the appropriate parameters are selected, pressing the "Show Font"
button will select an available font which closely matches the specified
parameters, and display a sample in the bottom section of the dialog
box. Also, specific information about the selected font will be
displayed in the "Font Selected" box.
If a desired font is selected, pressing the "Accept" button will modify
the font of all notes to the selected font, and save the font
information. Pressing the "Cancel" button will close the dialog box
without making any font changes.
Note Window
-----------
Each note is an editable window. Standard editing operations are
available. Contents and the position of each window is saved whenever
you end the program; when you run the program again, all the notes will
be restored. A note window can be moved just like a normal window; its
size, however, cannot be changed.
Each note window also has the standard system menu gadget. System menu
will show the following menu items:
Move Allows the user to move the icon.
Switch To... Allows the user to switch to another window.
Delete this note Selecting this menu item deletes this note.
Undo Undoes the last editing operation.
Cut Deletes the selected text and copies it into
the system clipboard.
Copy Copies the selected text into the system
clipboard.
Paste Copies the content of the system clipboard
at the cursor position.
Clear Deletes the selected text without affecting
the content of the system clipboard.
Notes Icon
----------
If there is at least one note that's hidden, a Notes Icon will be
displayed. This icon operates just like a standard application icon.
Just like the controller icon, it cannot be maximized into a window.
Clarification: a note window that is covered by another window is not
considered to be "hidden" - a note is "hidden" when you select "Hide all
notes" menu item on the Controller Icon and it disappears.
When you click on the Notes Icon, it will display a system menu with the
following menu items:
Move Allows the user to move the icon.
Switch To... Allows the user to switch to another window.
Show all notes Selecting this menu item will show all
active notes (just like selecting the menu
item by the same name on the Controller
Icon).
Miscellaneous
-------------
WinPost will create a file named WINPOST.DAT in your Windows directory
to keep track of notes. If it finds that this data file has been
created by an earlier version WinPost, it will convert it to the new
format automatically.
